I was in high school and one of my favorite guitarists of all time - Ritchie Blackmore - had just split from my favorite band - Deep Purple. They brought in Tommy Bolin, but his sound just didn't cut it for me. Might have been fine for T-Rex, but not Deep Purple. Then, one evening we were all gathered at my grandparent's house playing cards and I heard a song on radio and I started yelling, "Ritchie Blackmore is back with Deep Purple!" Then the vocals started... I was amazed. Ronnie James Dio started belting out "Man on the Silver Mountain" and he instantly became my favorite hard rock vocalist. His voice is/was amazing.
For those of you who haven't heard Ronnie James Dio sing, I suggest the following: Rainbow (first album), Rainbow Rising, and Long Live Rock and Roll. Additionally, Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell is a fantastic album that has Dio's influence all over it.
